The Causes of Blockages

Most drainage systems over 20 years old are constructed from earthenware pipework which is susceptible to fracturing, leading to the escape of water in the surrounding ground area.

During the 1960s a new pipe material called pitch fibre was commonly used. This was subsequently found to be inherently defective and in time will deteriorate. Once water starts to flow out it can cause subsidence and may lead the drain to collapse.

Tree roots will penetrate small cracks in pipes and make them larger. Once the water starts to leak it encourages more root growth and the damage gets progressively worse unless something is done.
